Self-defence

Just as knowledge of CPR and basic water safety are essential life skills, everyone should at some time or another learn basic self-defence.

Whilst self-defence is an integral component of the Academy's Wu-Wei Dao system we also offer short courses in self-defence.

The Introductory Self-Defence Course is a six lesson certificate course that is designed for the lay-person and is intended to equip the participant with the means to defend themselves in a variety of circumstances within the limitations of a short course.

The philosophy behind the course emphasises avoiding confrontation wherever possible, and where not possible, suggests methods for conflict resolution through non-aggressive means. Moreover this philosophy is embodied in the actual techniques which utilise the attacker's force against the attacker and/or circular movements to deflect attacks.

The techniques taught in the course do not require acrobatic ability, great strength or flexibility and are easy to learn so that they can be applied by anyone.

In general the course covers defences against single and multiple attackers, unarmed and armed that can be adapted to a variety of situations. However defences against knife and stick wielding attackers are only introduced in the latter half of the course. Furthermore, to better understand the dynamics of those weapons, participants are also taught the basics of how to use such weapons in their own defence.

Breakouts from a variety of grabs and holds are taught as are the basics of falling correctly and defending oneself from the ground if knocked down.

A number of self-defence scenarios are examined including: dealing with home invasions, surviving in a hostile crowd (e.g. riot or stampede), dealing with dog attacks and others as well as the subject of self defence and the law. In each case discussion is encouraged.

Finally, throughout the course, participants are taught methods to improve their assertiveness, self-confidence and self control both with a view to effective self-defence and for personal development.
